Filling out the warrants left Shawn hungry. Steak and eggs did the trick. He was on his third cup of coffee when his phone rang.

“Mitchell.”

“Shawn, it’s Justin Gage.”

“Hey, Justin. Long time.”

“Too long. Been out to the links lately?”

Shawn laughed. “You mean have I contributed any golf balls to the ponds around Wrenwood’s?”

“That’s exactly what I mean!”

“Not in a while. You?”

“I wish. You know I’m with the gang squad now, right?”

“I did not.”

“Yeah. Made sergeant, too.”

“Congrats.”

“Anyway, I didn’t call to catch up…at least, not solely.” His tone turned serious. “You’re working the Lori Wilson homicide, correct?”

“Yeah.”

“So, I busted a kid two nights ago for possession, and he claimed to have information about your case.”

“Oh? He share it with you?”

“Not yet. Claims he wants a deal.”

Shawn downed the rest of his coffee and stood. “You think he’s legit?”

“Well, you know how it is when someone is in a bind; they’ll say anything. Still, I’ve gotten intel from him before, and it turned out to be on the level.”

“Okay. I’ll be glad to talk with him. Where is he?”

“Brickyard Road.”

“What’s his name?”

“Kevin Pierce.”

“I’ll head up there now.”

“Oh, okay. I’m here. You want me to hang around?”

Shawn stepped out into the steamy afternoon air and went to his car. “If you don’t mind.” He noted the drawbridge was just going up. “Shouldn’t take me more than about fifteen minutes to get there.”

“No worries. See you when you get here.”

“Good deal. Thanks, Justin.”

Shawn hung up and started his car. The rain from the day before had left the air extra humid, so he cranked up the air conditioner. A line was already forming at the Savannah Highway Bridge, and he didn’t know how long he’d be stuck. Anxious to find out if this was his big break in the case, he chose to turn the opposite direction on Savannah Highway and head for a solid bridge farther up the river.
